Day 19

Luke 10:3-9

Before you begin, take a few moments to quiet your mind and prepare your heart to receive God’s Word. Read the following passage at least twice, and then pray through the points below.

3 Go your way; behold, I am sending you out as lambs in the midst of wolves. 4 Carry no moneybag, no knapsack, no sandals, and greet no one on the road. 5 Whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace be to this house!’ 6 And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest upon him. But if not, it will return to you. 7 And remain in the same house, eating and drinking what they provide, for the laborer deserves his wages. Do not go from house to house. 8 Whenever you enter a town and they receive you, eat what is set before you. 9 Heal the sick in it and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’

Today's Prayer Points

  • In Luke 10, the Lord gave very clear instructions to the seventy-two who were sent out regarding how to act on their journey. They were to take no provisions, but to trust that they would be provided for through the hospitality of “people of peace” in the places they visited. Take a few moments to reflect on the instructions listed in verses 3-9. Why might the Lord have sent out teams in this way? Ask God to reveal the truth of His Word to you as you pray today.

  • “People of peace” are leaders in their communities. They have reputation and influence, and how they treat outsiders often dictates how other community members will receive guests. Sometimes these are leaders with clearly delegated authority or status. Other times they hold more informal positions of influence. People of peace can pave the way for the gospel message to enter a community. Ask God to make clear who these people of peace are in the people groups, tribes, and communities where we will be going. Pray for favor with them, that the gospel message may be boldly preached among their people without hindrance or complication.

  • Hospitality plays a significant role in many cultures of the world, including those represented in God’s Word. In Luke 10, we see the necessity of hospitality in mission. Ask God to foster relationships through hospitality between goers and the unreached they live among. Pray that the language of hospitality would break down many walls and would create environments where lives can be shared and truth can be received.
